IRC – Fun! New toys.
by Matt Richards on Aug.29, 2010, under Uncategorized
I don’t normally blog about IRC, I figure if you are interested in it you are there. If you’re not, you don’t want to hear about it. But I spent a lot of time yesterday trying to figure out a fairly easy to configure and light weight bot that’ll post RSS feeds into my IRC Channel. It turns out no such solution exists, all IRC Bots can do many different things and vary in complexity. I gave the good old Eggdrop IRC Bot a try, but it seems like this bot hasn’t been updated sense I used it several years back. It is still a major pain in the rear to setup. However, I’ve been told once they’re configured properly (if you have the several hours to sit there and debug it), they do run forever. However, I do not have such the paitence anymore, especially tinkering around with a codebase that lacks proper SSL and IPv6 support. After tinkering around with the Eggdrop for about an hour, I gave up on it. Then I crawled back to what I currently run Gozerbot, went to the website as I was going to report my problems with RSS feeds to the Author.. Just to find out the project had been disbanded.
However, this story has a happy ending like most of them do. Yes, Gozerbot as a standalone IRC bot has been discontinued, but the Author is working on a new bot that can communicate over XMPP, IRC and it can use GAE. While its still in ALPHA stages, it works well for what I need RSS feeds, and its not to hard to configure them (just one command)! And in addition to RSS, I can have the bot forward blips from Wave, or other conversations over XMPP.

Sometimes, you wonder. How long it will take to handle a simple task. It can take several hours.
Live Chat
by Matt Richards on Jul.17, 2010, under Personal, Servers
This is a short note to let the few readers (if any) know how you can chat with Live chat to me. I’m fairly active on serveral Internet Relay Chat (IRC for short) servers. But the one that makes it easiest for you to reach me on is called GeekShed. This small network allows Flash IRC Clients to connect to it. I presume most computers (and mobile devices) with a web browser has access to Flash these days. You can get the information on how to connect on the live chat link at the top left of my blog. Alternatively you can use a new and improved flash client on chat.eggy.cc!
Thaat is all for now.
Chromium OS
by Matt Richards on Jul.15, 2010, under Google
Last couple of posts have been about my Pandora progress. I’m still patiently waiting for the email saying its going to be shipped, but while I wait I’ve got to occupy myself with a couple of side projects. One of them is Google’s Chromium OS, the developer side of me has always wanted to build an entier operating system from source. Being involved with the Chromium OS project has helped me establish this need and I love working with Google.
I’ve been tracking the Chromium OS project from the day Google made the announcement to open the code to everybody. That day (or maybe it was the day after) took the plunge and downloaded the source code and built an entier operating system from source. It was very daunting at first, but I struggled through it and now I build Chromium OS at least once a week to see what Google has done to improve it.
(Btw, you’ll notice that I’m not saying Chrome OS. It is the same operating system, but as I’m NOT Google nor will I be bundling the OS with a net book I’m creating.. I will not call it Chrome OS.)
Now that there’s some history, here’s what I really wanted to say.. According to the Chrome developer mailing list there might be some vmware based builds available for anybody to test. Though, Google has not released any official binary builds at this point, they might just keep them internally.
An Update
by Matt Richards on May.31, 2010, under Pandora
Well, I bit the bullet and I decided to email Open Pandora Sales department asking where I was in the queue (for the record the sales department is only one lovely person, and she does a wonderful job considering). It looks like, as I predicted, it is going to be a long wait before I’ll get this new toy. I keep reading more and more user reviews, I must admit I’m a small bit jealous. I’m not as far down in the queue as I thought, but I’m still a tad worried… I’m past the first 1,000 and I’ve not heard anything about new cases arriving.
*keeps his fingers crossed*
Here it comes!

I’ve been striving for something to blog about for quite some time, I suppose I shall share my thoughts on a small project I’ve been following for the past two years. Its called Open Panndora its unique device similar to a Nintendo DS. However, it is way more powerful than a DS is. The wonderful thing about the device is its completely community driven and open source. Meaning, there is NO commercial entity controlling licensing and what goes on the device, its completely up to the community behind it. Now that you have a rough idea as to what the device is, I’ll be blogging here with my thoughts and struggles getting this device to work properly.
They’ve started to ship them as of early last week! That’s the great news, finally other community members are getting a hold of them! However, I don’t expect to get mine for while yet. As I know my order number is really late in the first batch. To make a long story short, I pre-ordered back when they thought they were close to shipping them (this was in 2008), but due to finical and other difficulties at the time, I canceled my order at that point. However, back in October (2009) I got a news letter from the team saying they still had a few left in the First Batch. I emailed in asking if they could accept charge cards yet. Once I was told they could I re-ordered. On that note, I”m not sure if I’ll make the first 1000 they’ve got cases for. And I’m to shy to email in asking where I am in line, I’ll just wait it out.. I’ve been waiting for a while now, mine as well keep waiting.
Its been a long several years. Props to everybody on the team getting this far into production. I cannot wait till I get the email saying mine is on its way!!
